Dr Parveen Kanji is one of the most respected names in obstetrics and gynaecology. While her practice covers the entire range in this specialty, she has come to be known as an expert in handling high-risk obstetrics in particular. She is also a pioneer in the field of infertility treatments.
Dr Kanji performs all modes of deliveries (vaginal and operative) and does all kinds of gynaecological surgery ranging from the minor — Dilation and curettage (D&C), McDonald’s or cervical stitch and vaginal repair procedures — to the major ones such as the extensive abdominal hysterectomy for cancer cases. She also performs intermediate surgical procedures such as the minimally invasive or keyhole laparoscopy (diagnostic and operative) confined to ovarian cysts.
Dr Kanji started her practice in 1980 as the founder of the Aga Khan Maternity Home in Karimabad where she was the chief consultant. It was here that she treated all types of obstetric and gynaecology cases for women who came from all over Karachi and the adjoining rural areas such as Thatta. The maternity home had an average of 25,000 deliveries a year.
In 1998, Dr Kanji went to Perth, Australia for training in infertility treatments and today she is part of the South City Hospital IVF & Genetic Centre. She covers the primary investigative and diagnostics for subfertile couples, the intermediate or minor surgeries, if needed, and the tertiary procedures such as IVF and ICSII.
While Dr Kanji’s practice covers the entire range of obstetrics and gynaecology, she has over the decades come to be respected as a consultant for high-risk cases. This refers to a category of young women who have had unsuccessful pregnancies (mostly in the first trimester) but have been undiagnosed for the cause. Dr Kanji treats these cases, which she has found are in many cases linked to an undiagnosed autoimmune disease and which are treatable with various therapies.
